Turner on the Tyne
I was delighted to attend the preview for the fabulous new JMW Turner exhibition – Art, Industry & Nostalgia – at the Laing in Newcastle yesterday. There was a real buzz around the event, as this is the first time that Turner’s The Fighting Temeraire has been to the north of England. The curation of the exhibition was exciting, bringing together a notable number of Turner’s works, from preliminary sketches and first draft watercolours to large scale finished works – provocatively displayed alongside much more recent artworks and photographs exploring the industrial past of this area. The gallery was packed, which made getting up close and contemplative with many of the works a bit of a challenge, but the upside was having the other Laing galleries to ourselves afterwards!
