All about Being Human
I’ve long been a fan of the annual Being Human Festival, which engages people with academic research into the Humanities in fun and fascinating ways every November. So it’s been great fun working with Dr Claire Bessant of Northumbria University and photographer Chris Woodcock (White Oak Studios), both local friends and colleagues, to set up a week’s worth of displays and events at The Heritage Centre in Bellingham, Northumberland (7th-16th November 2024).
The activities at the Centre are themed around raising awareness of protecting privacy when taking and sharing photographs of friends and families, with a particular focus on children. The displays, schools workshops and storytelling sessions for adults look at the history of photography, the rise of social media and the impact of AI, with key take-home messages around Taking Care Before You Share and Keep Hold of Your Story. Importantly, there are practical tips to help people be more careful as well as supporting advice and information for anyone who has been adversely affected.
