All the feels – more than a meme

Check out page 20 of the summer edition of The Journal of the Association for Heritage Interpretation for an article written by my lovely colleague, mentor and friend Carolyn Lloyd Brown and me, about using emotional mapping to plot sense of place at heritage sites. Carolyn begins by wondering why emotional mapping – understanding people’s emotional responses to place – has been used for years by town planners and architects but not often by interpretive planners. The article describes how we applied this process last year to an internationally significant battlefield in the UK, the benefits of using this approach alongside more traditional interpretive planning techniques, and how interpreters might apply the process to their own work. The article also features a fabulously moody shot of me taking notes on the battlefield just after a major blizzard had passed over the site!
