ST AIDAN’S CRYPT, BAMBURGH: INTERPRETATION PLAN & DELIVERY
It was an exciting challenge to work with Bright to prepare an interpretation plan
and deliver the interpretation for the historic crypt at St Aidan’s Church for Northumberland
Coast AONB and partners, funded by the NLHF.
The remains of over 100 Anglo Saxons, originally buried beside Bamburgh Castle and
uncovered during a storm, have been reinterred here. The remains were carefully studied,
revealing that they were contemporaries of St Aidan and many had arrived in Bamburgh
from as far afield as North Africa and Italy. Their extraordinary story is told using
an engaging AV presentation in the historic crypt, accessible displays in the church
and the comprehensive Bamburgh Bones website.
I worked with the design team to establish the interpretive approach, and researched
and wrote the interpretive content, including script-writing the AV show.
